UNC-TV spotlights local volunteer fire departments

Two Dare County Volunteer Fire Departments are in the spotlight this wekend on the UNC TV program “My Heart Will Always Be In Carolina.”

The Roanoke Island Fire Department was the first organized in the county and the Hatteras Department was the first on the barrier islands.

The program is scheduled to air Sunday, May 15, 2011 at 6:30 PM on the network.

In years gone by the sailors from the Navy Base and Coast Guard Stations would often come to the aid of the local residents to help put out fires. After seeing their neighbors’ homes and sometimes the town lost to the flames it became apparent that the communities needed organized fire departments.

Once established Roanoke Island and Hatteras helped other fire departments get started up and down the Outer Banks.

The program looks at the history of these two departments and the challenges they have faced over the years, from driving the large fire engines on the sand to fighting fires during hurricanes.
